Russia blocks instant messaging platform Discord over 'Unlawful Information Posting'
Discord has been added to the growing list of tech companies banned by Russia. According to Russia's news agency, TASS, the platform is accused of breaking the country's laws. This is the latest step by the government as it continues to increase control over the internet.
Access to Discord was being "restricted due to the violation of requirements of Russian legislation" pertaining to "preventing the use of messaging for terrorist and extremist purposes", telecoms watchdog Roskomnadzor said in a statement.
For years, Russia has been telling foreign platforms to take down content it considers "illegal" and has been giving out fines when they don't follow the rules.
In July 2023, a Moscow court fined US-based Discord six million rubles (about $62,000) for not removing "illegal" content. Russia's internet regulator, Roskomnadzor, said Discord didn't follow the court's order.
Even though Discord is popular with young people, it's not used as much as Telegram by most people in Russia.
Since Russia started its attack on Ukraine in February 2022, the government has increased control over the internet, including blocking several Western websites and social media platforms.
