Short-form video may be quietly disabling your brain's self-control circuit
Watching short videos you enjoy might temporarily "turn down" parts of your brain that handle self-control and paying attention to your own behavior. This might be connected to a brain chemical called glutamate. The study was published in a science journal called NeuroImage.
Short-video apps are designed around quick clips that you can skip or keep watching in just a few seconds. For most people, this is fun and not a problem. But scientists want to understand why some people find it so hard to stop scrolling. One idea is that when a video is enjoyable and pulls you in, your brain doesn't feel like it needs to watch itself as closely or use much self-control.
This study looked at two brain areas. One is called the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex — it notices when something needs extra attention or effort. The other is the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex — it helps you stay focused and resist distractions. Together, these two areas help you control your behavior in situations that require attention and willpower.
The researchers also looked at two brain chemicals. Glutamate is the brain's main "gas pedal" chemical — it revs up brain activity. GABA is the main "brake pedal" chemical — it calms brain activity down. The scientists wanted to know if the natural levels of these chemicals (measured while resting) could explain why some people's brains react more strongly than others while watching short videos.
The study was led by Tiantian Hong at Zhejiang University in China. They started with 66 young adults, but had to remove some because they moved too much during scanning or their brain chemistry scans weren't clear enough. That left 56 people, averaging about 23 years old, including 19 women.
First, each person had a special brain scan (called proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy) to measure their glutamate and GABA levels. Then they watched short videos while inside an MRI machine that tracks brain activity. They watched two 6-minute rounds of videos and could press a button to skip to the next one anytime. If someone watched a video all the way through, researchers counted it as "liked." If they skipped it before the halfway point, it was counted as "disliked."
The main finding: when people watched videos they "liked," both self-control brain areas became less active — dropping below their normal resting level.
Videos people "disliked" showed a different pattern. The first brain area (dorsal anterior cingulate cortex) stayed at its normal activity level, but the second one (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) was still quieted down. Meanwhile, the visual part of the brain stayed active no matter what — showing the results weren't just because people were staring at a screen.
The researchers also found that people who naturally had higher glutamate levels showed less quieting of these self-control brain areas while watching videos. GABA levels didn't seem to matter as much. Basically, the more glutamate someone had at rest, the more their brain stayed "switched on" during video watching, instead of dialing down. This suggests that glutamate might explain why some people's brains have an easier or harder time watching short videos without losing focus.
Interestingly, the two self-control brain areas actually started "talking" to each other more while people watched videos, especially ones they liked. But the researchers say this doesn't mean self-control got stronger. Instead, it may mean the two areas were being quieted down together, in a more coordinated way.
A few limits to keep in mind: this study didn't directly test video addiction or compulsive scrolling. Also, "liked" videos were only defined by whether someone kept watching — not by asking people afterward how much they actually enjoyed it. Lastly, the study only included young adults, and most were men, so the results may not apply to everyone.
