World War III Has Officially Begun, Says Ukraine’s Former Top General
Ukraine's former top military leader, Valery Zaluzhny, says World War III has already begun because Russia's allies are now directly helping in its war against Ukraine.
"I believe that in 2024 we can absolutely believe that the Third World War has begun," said Zaluzhny, who is now Ukraine's envoy to the United Kingdom, during a speech at Ukrainska Pravda's UP100 award ceremony.
"Because in 2024, Ukraine is no longer facing Russia. Soldiers from North Korea are standing in front of Ukraine. Let's be honest. Already in Ukraine, the Iranian 'Shahedis' are killing civilians absolutely openly, without any shame," said Zaluzhny, adding that North Korean and Chinese weapons are flying into Ukraine.
Zaluzhny called on Ukraine's allies to learn the right lessons.
"It is still possible to stop it here, on the territory of Ukraine. But for some reason our partners do not want to understand this. It is obvious that Ukraine already has too many enemies. Ukraine will survive with technology, but it is not clear whether it can win this battle alone," he said.
Zaluzhny's speech at the ceremony reflected his serious view of the war. Last year, in an essay for The Economist that upset Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Zaluzhny compared the current conflict to the stalemate seen during World War I.
In February, Zelenskyy removed Zaluzhny from his position due to disagreements over how the war in Ukraine should be handled. Another reason was Zaluzhny's increasing popularity, which made him a potential political rival.
General Zaluzhny was praised for stopping and pushing back Russia's first attack, which began on February 24, 2022. However, his reputation was later affected by the unsuccessful counteroffensive last year. His position was handed over to General Oleksandr Syrskyi, who is considered to have a closer relationship with the president.
