Department of Homeland Security officially terminates controversial disinformation board following wave of backlash

The Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) highly criticized Disinformation Governance Board has officially been dissolved.

"In accordance with the HSAC’s prior recommendation, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas has terminated the Disinformation Governance Board and rescinded its charter effective today, August 24, 2022," a DHS news release states.

The termination comes after the controversial working group was put on "pause" less than a month after DHS announced its presence and appointed someone to run it.

"With the HSAC recommendations as a guide, the Department will continue to address threat streams that undermine the security of our country consistent with the law, while upholding the privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties of the American people and promoting transparency in our work," DHS's statement continues.

The new disinformation board faced a wave of criticism after DHS announced its creation, including for who the department selected to head the new board — Nina Jankowicz. After being appointed to the new position, Janowicz’s objectivity was frequently questioned.

A video of Jankowicz surfaced following her appointment revealing politically biased thoughts about online criticism of critical race theory (CRT). In the video, Jankowicz argues "Republicans and other disinformers" are engaged in exploiting false narratives about the subject "for profit."

Jankowicz also garnered flak for calling the Hunter Biden laptop story Russian disinformation, along with other questionable comments.

Following the "pause" of the Disinformation Governance Board critics began questioning whether the work it was created to do would actually end.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at the time of the pause that the administration would still "continue the work" the disinformation board was expected to undertake.
